Since the European goldfinch (Carduelis carduelis) was known to feed on thistle and thorny plants, parricularly roses, it became visually linked to Christ's crown of thorns and so forshadows the redemptive suffering of Jesus in the future. Sometimes Jesus holds a thorny rose instead, which also alludes to the crown of thorns and His passion.
